April 22, 2012 Speaker: Series: Carrying the Torch

Topic: Perseverance Passage: Hebrews 12:1

Heb. 12:1 (NCV) “We have around us many people whose lives tell us what faith means. So let us run the race that is before us and never give up…”

Heb. 12:1b (NCV) “Let us run the race that is before us and never give up. We should remove from our lives anything that would get in the way and the sin that so easily holds us back.”

Ph. 3:13-14 (LB) "Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead , I strain to reach the end of the race..."
1 Cor 9:25-26 (LB) “To win the contest you must deny yourselves many things that would keep you from doing your best... but we do it for a heavenly reward that never disappears. So I run straight to the goal with purpose in every step.”
Heb. 6:12 (Mes) “Don't drag your feet. Be like those who stay the course with committed faith and then get everything promised to them.”

Gal 6:9 (LB) “Let us not get tired of doing what is right, for after a while we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't get discouraged and give up.”

Ps. 94:19 (LB) "Lord, when doubts fill my mind, when my heart is in turmoil, quiet me and give me renewed hope and cheer."
Phil. 1:6 (LB) “God who began the good work within you will keep right on helping you grow in His grace until His task within you is finally finished..."

Ps 127:2 (LB) “ …God wants His loved ones to get their proper rest.”

2 Cor. 4:16 (NLT) “This why we never give up …our spirits are being renewed every day.”

Heb. 12:2 (GN) “Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, on whom our faith depends from beginning to end. He did not give up because of the cross!”

2 Tim. 4:7 (NIV) “ I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

Hebrews 12:1-7 Do you see what this means—all these pioneers who blazed the way, all these veterans cheering us on? It means we'd better get on with it. Strip down, start running—and never quit! No extra spiritual fat, no parasitic sins. [2] Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we're in. Study how he did it. Because he never lost sight of where he was headed—that exhilarating finish in and with God—he could put up with anything along the way: cross, shame, whatever. And now he's there, in the place of honor, right alongside God. [3] When you find yourselves flagging in your faith, go over that story again, item by item, that long litany of hostility he plowed through. That will shoot adrenaline into your souls! [4] In this all-out match against sin, others have suffered far worse than you, to say nothing of what Jesus went through—all that bloodshed! [5] So don't feel sorry for yourselves. Or have you forgotten how good parents treat children, and that God regards you as his children? My dear child, don't shrug off God's discipline, but don't be crushed by it either. [6] It's the child he loves that he disciplines;the child he embraces, he also corrects." [7] God is educating you; that's why you must never drop out. He's treating you as dear children.
